The Princess Grace Awards is not your typical annual gala---and that’s not because a real royal, like the The Princess of Hanover Caroline (that would be Grace Kelly’s daughter) gets to present the recipients with honors. The event is largely a two part (but in the same day!) affair: a luscious luncheon at Daniel and formal party at Cipriani 42nd Street. This year, it attracted the hostess from Europe and in the evening, this year’s Prince Rainier III Award winner, Denzel Washington. “My mother will, of course, be remembered for her film work,” said Princess Caroline. “But just the fact that we’re keeping the legacy of these art awards alive would really make her proud.” Alex Soldier, a Russian-born, New York-based jewelry maestro, designed this year’s top prize for the second straight year. “It’s become sort of a tradition for me,” smiled Soldier. “But it has to feel good when an Oscar winner like Denzel gets an award designed by me as well!”
