Next big thing alert! Pitti Uomo presented Andrea Pompilio's men's collection last week after he won their Who's On Next competition for rising newcomers. With a background working for Prada, YSL, and Calvin, his is a name to remember, dolls. Chic caught up with Pompilio for a moment before his show to find out why there were stuffed monkeys backstage.
First, let's talk monkeys!
Monkeys are the coolest animal. I opened last season with a monkey T-shirt and one of my close friends gave me all these stuffed monkeys for Christmas, so now they've become our mascot for some stupid reason. We brought the monkey to Pitti last time and the show went well, so we're bringing it back for good luck.
But not a real monkey!
No, no, no. Maybe next season. I did think about it, but it was too complicated.
Gotcha! You have quite a background.
I started working when I was very young and I jumped around which was very good, because I took more and more from the different companies. I'm a melting pot of all these different experiences.
You were at Pitti in January as part of their 'Who's On Next' and you won.
Yes! And the prize is a full fashion show at Pitti. Pitti says that I have been a lucky guy for them and they have been good to me. I'm happy to be here.
How do you feel before a show?
I'm actually quite relaxed to tell you the truth. I'm not a panic-y guy. This collection has been done since the May 15. I haven't changed a thing since then. I'm not the kind of designer who is working up to the last minute.
What's your sign?
I'm a Leo.
You're getting your men's line off the ground right now...but would you like to dabble in women's design down the road?
It is the plan, but not now. I don't know when. People keep asking me. A lot of journalists are women, and they keep asking me to do something for women! Someday!
