(NEW YORK) Just in time for the heart of a sweaty Gotham summer, Paul Kasmin in cooperation with Fred Torres Collaborations and Tony Shafrazi hosted a private viewing of David LaChapelle’s American Jesus. The exhibit attracted a large, sun-soaked crowd, including Julian Schnabel, Amanda Lepore, Lenny Kravitz, Sandy Brant, Ingrid Sischy and Hana Soukupova. While LaChapelle has turned his lens on an impressive amount of celebrities, last night’s viewing was focused on a tribute to Michael Jackson, a close friend of the artist. “I hang out with Michael and Jesus everyday,” said the photographer. “I mean, it’s kind of like hanging out. I pray to both of them.” Jackson’s music filled the gallery as guests viewed the photographer’s work, which featured Jackson as a modern day martyr alongside art-lover and super Soukupova.  “I think this show is about enlightenment. I want to be enlightened and I think that should be all of our quests, to become better people,” added LaChapelle, who jets off to Tel Aviv on Friday. “I’m going to be traveling through the Middle East, and this is what I’ll be wearing. I thought I’d start early because it has been so hot this week!"
