2013 March 26
We're still processing those truly unforgettable sights we saw during Miami Fashion Week held at their convention center from March 20th to 23rd. Ultra, smultra! So, who are the designers to know? The dashing Nicolas Felizola, for starters. He's a Miami-based Venezuelan who we caught up with backstage to give us the scoop on his fascinating past and what this local icon does when he isn't designing for the women of South Beach and beyond. (For the record: The Real Houswives of Miami were indeed front row.)
Nice to meet you! How are you?
I'm very excited! I just received the Miami Fashion Week Fashion Icon award. I'm honored. I feel really glad, but it's a big commitment to receive awards.
Who is an icon to you?
One of the biggest was Cristóbal Balenciaga. He understood the woman's body. I've been admiring him since I was a little boy. His name is still at the top of the fashion world.
How many years have you shown at Miami Fashion Week?
This is my fifth year here and I've been a designer for eight years. It's a great stage for everybody to show their own ideas about fashion; there's opportunity for everybody to express themselves. It's a platform for all Latinos. We consider Miami the capital of Latin America.
How has showing in Miami influenced your business?
A lot. I've shown all over Latin America and New York Fashion Week. Every year that I'm here inspires me. The first year that I was here, I won best designer of the year. I've been winning awards here since then. It's big exposure because we have press from all over the world. People all see that there's more to Miami than beaches and music.
What do you do for fun?
Sleep! I like to sleep for fun. I try to wake up at 10 a.m. every morning and go to bed around 2 or 3 a.m.
Are you a party boy?
I'm not! I like to be relaxed. I obviously play sports, and go boating and fishing. One of my favorite hobbies is to do just nothing.
And sleep and sleep...
What do you dream about?
Dreams can be amazing moments of inspirations. You have to take advantage of the moment. Sometimes I have ideas and they become a reality after because I take a piece of paper beside my nightstand. I'll write down an idea in the night and make it a reality.
How old are you?
I'm 47 years old.
You're no spring chicken!
I'm not. I've been a lawyer, painter, photographer, model, actor and fashion photographer.
Wow! You're a renaissance man!
That's what they call me.
