La Vie en Ruffian: Celebrating Beth Rudin DeWoody

Our Ruffian boys, Brian Wolk and Claude Morais, are dear amis of socialite and art collector Beth Rudin DeWoody. Isn't it about time you met?

"White is a shade, the perception of which is evoked by light that stimulates all three types of color-sensitive cone cells in the human eye in nearly equal amounts, and with high brightness compared to the surroundings. A white visual stimulation will be void of hue and grayness. White light can be generated in many ways. The sun is such a source, electric incandescence is another, and the most recent source is no other than the playful and provocative Beth Rudin DeWoody at her most recent show,January White Sale, at Loretta Howard Gallery. This marks the second of her color-themed exhibitions, the first of which was “Think Pink” at Gavlak Gallery in Palm Beach. When we asked her why she chose white for this show, in her signature wit she said, 'I love the cleanliness of white.  It evens the odds and one could look at shape, texture and design without the distraction of color. I am spiritually linked to white. I’m sure and that’s why I keep going there.'

The eclectic mix of uptown and downtown, artists and art lovers at her opening night was reflective of Beth’s inclusive world and generous spirit. Kyle DeWoody, Beth’s daughter, our very close friend and a muse of Ruffian, shined at the opening with her singular style and effervescent spirit. Kyle’s event décor and interior work is making her one of the most sought-after designers amongst the most toniest of Manhattan and Hamptons clients, not to mention a de rigueur aesthete at the Ruffian Studio. We were also excited to see Joanne Cassullo at the opening.  Joanne is not only enchanting and lovely, but a veritable encyclopedia of knowledge of contemporary art.

Just a few days later, we were lucky enough to be invited to Beth’s Gracie Square home for a luncheon in honor of Antonin Baudry, Cultural Counselor to the French Embassy in the United States. It is always a treat to go up to Beth’s place. It is an electric stimulation for all of the senses; a visual and culinary feast. The luncheon menu included salmon a la planche and shaved chard and pine-nut salad.  It was so delicious it even tempted Martha Stewart to have seconds! Other notable guests included the sculptor Christo, interior designer Jean-Paul Beaujard, French cultural academic Annie Cohen-Solal, and James Lipton of the Inside the Actors Studio.  We were also enchanted to make the acquaintance of Frederique Thiollet, Carin Goldberg of The New York Times and the lovely Berenice Vila Baudry (the very chic and intelligent wife of Antonin Baudry). Weeks like this filled with inspiration make us truly appreciate living in New York with its great diversity. It is so very important for artists to have people who believe in their work and support them. Beth and the family DeWoody not only patronize art, they live and breathe it.

In honor of our new French Cultural Counselor, we asked Beth to name a few of her favorite French things.'
