Keen on Kneen
(NEW YORK) Simon Kneen showed fresh inspiration for the Banana Republic’s Spring Summer 2011 collection, which he presented last night. He introduced a new venue (the Tunnel), a fresh stylist (in Lori Goldstein), and a motif governed by breezy prints and pastels. “This year is really about discovery, and trying new things and without any inhabitations,” said the designer. “I’ve been lucky enough to travel so much in my lifetime, so this collection is based on overall rich memories, rather than specific, recent experiences.” He covered plenty of ground, from tailored safari jackets to elegant maxi skirts to exotic print party dresses and oceanic tulip skirts. Accessory-wise, wooden heels with woven edges reigned supreme.
“I’m a big sketcher and painter,” added Kneen backstage. “I don’t have a lot of time to paint, but when I do it, I really enjoy it. I actually asked my partner for a set of oils as a Christmas present.” While his women’s offerings were plenty dreamy, the menswear was particularly strong, consisting of desirable bright tees, streamlined cargo pants, button-up sweaters, and yes, safari and military jackets. Will Kneen ever take on safari journey of his own? “I’ll probably do that when I retire," he smiled. "Maybe in thirty years."
