Chic would settle for just one diamond ring, but for Harry Winston that is just not enough. Apparently, $500 million worth of diamonds is more up Winston's alley! Harry Winston Diamond Mines Ltd. has purchased BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP)’s Ekati mine in Canada and its marketing operations, bearing a price tag of a cool $500 mil. Why make such a whopping purchase? The Ekati mine has produced more than $750 million of rough diamonds annually for the past five years, which is about six percent of world supply by value. Translation: a whole lot of happy brides-to-be.
