Chic caught up with Marchesa's Keren Craig and Georgina Chapman backstage at their Fall 2013 bridal show to discuss parfum, bridal memories, and the wedding gowns they created for their big day!
Loved your collection’s floral inspiration!
KC: We’ve been so immersed in our fragrance for the last year and a half, so we wanted to create our scent in a gown! The two of the main notes are iris and Bulgarian rose.
What was the starting point for the collection?
KC: The finale dress in today’s collection is actually one that Georgina draped up for the fragrance campaign. We ended up going in a different direction with the campaign, but that helped us focus this bridal collection.
How’s life post-fragrance launch?
GC: It only launched a month ago, but we’ve had the perfume for a while, in so many forms with various tweaks to the formula.
KC: It’s an exciting new venture for us, and every part of the process is so interesting—it’s every person’s dream to make their own scent, isn’t it? We felt so lucky.
Any plans to foray further into beauty under the Marchesa name?
GC: We’d love to!
Is your process any different when designing bridal?
GC: No, because at the end of the day we want to make women feel their most beautiful—to put on a dress and feel magical! That applies to eveningwear, bridal, and anything we do.
How about the vibe in Marchesa HQ while crafting the collection? Some love songs on the soundtrack, perhaps?
KC: It’s not very romantic in our studio!
GC: Ha! We wish. Other people might think it’s romantic, but to us, it’s another day at work!
KC: It is quite lovely, though, when you walk into the room and see a sea of white.
What are your favorite bridal memories?
KC: Obviously, my wedding day was one of the happiest days of my entire life; the birth of my daughter was another.
What were your dresses like?
GC: Well, we made our own dresses!
KC: Georgina was draping and fitting her dress literally the day before.
GC: But not in the stressful way. It was actually a fun process.
Are you big criers at weddings?
GC: Sometimes, yeah!
KC: It’s a very emotional, wonderful moment: two people expressing their love for each other. There’s nothing more beautiful.
