(NEW YORK) Competing with Christopher Kane, Nicholas Kirkwood, Marios Schwab, Richard Nicoll, Clements Ribeiro, Angel Jackson, and E. Tautz can be no easy feat, but Erdem designer Erdem Moralioglu has today been named the winner of the inaugural BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund. The British counterpart to America’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award (most recently won by Sophie Theallet for a prize of $200,000), Moralioglu will receive £200,000 (about $303,000) and access to director-level mentors for a program designed to help him with his business goals for the nest 12 months.

"I am thrilled to be the winner of the BFC Vogue Fashion Fund,” said Moralioglu in a statement. “It is an honor. The prize will help us to take our business to the next level. It is so integral for us to be showing in London and the support of the BFC and Vogue will allow us to grow our business internationally. It is such exciting time for us."

"I am very excited by the prospects that the Fund offers not only in terms of finance but in mentoring,” said British Vogue editor in chief Alexandra Shulman. “In Erdem I feel we have a very worthy winner who already has an international reputation and who has the creativity and application that is needed to become a global business. He makes beautiful clothes that already have a recognizable stamp that is his alone." Shulman chaired the award’s judging panel, which also included top industry types like Sarah Manley of Burberry, Mary Homer of Topshop, the British Fashion Council’s Caroline Rush, and Lisa Armstrong of The Times.

Though this is the first year of the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund, the British Fashion Council has been actively supporting young talent through its NEWGEN supported by Topshop and Fashion Forward programs. The Fund was launched in 2008 but BFC chairman Harold Tillman. “Erdem has excellent design credentials, an impressive business plan and creates beautiful collections season after season,” said Tillman. “I am proud to say that the British Fashion Council’s Vogue Designer Fashion Fund will play a key role in developing Erdem’s already prominent designer business both here in the UK and abroad.”
