(NEW YORK) Deborah Needleman, most recently the editor in chief of the now-shuttered Domino, has been named editor in chief of WSJ. in a surprise move by Rupert Murdoch. (Horacio Silva and Julie Belcove were rumored to be up for the gig, along with The Daily’s recommendation, Monocle’s Tyler Brûlé.) Needleman replaces Tina Gaudoin, who is moving back to London and will contribute to The Wall Street Journal Europe; Gaudoin’s last issue will bow in October, while Needleman’s first will hit stands in December. Before founding Domino in 2005, Needleman served as editor at large at House & Garden, wrote “The Cranky Gardener” column for Slate, and contributed gardening and design pieces to The New York Times.

For the past few months, Needleman has been working as a consultant on the Journal's new weekly Saturday lifestyle section, which she will also edit. At roughly the same time last year, she was relishing her time off. “I've been deliriously loafing,” Needleman told us last summer. “I’m gardening and cooking like mad, making bread and tarts and picking loads of vegetables from my garden. It’s been a summer of heavenly housewifery!” Now, it's back to work.
