Bonjour, chisters! Rebecca Minkoff's latest travel column takes us to London.
"Sooner or later, London calls everyone. The lure of traveling to a foreign land where everyone speaks English and harbors a passion for pubs is exceptionally inviting. Not to mention it's fun to say things like "bangers and mash" and "arse" while referring to everyone ---including the bellboy---as "guv'nah."
After the dollhouse-sized hotel room in Paris, the Zetter was like a royal palace, if the Queen were partial to birdie wallpaper. Nestled in the fabulously chic Clerkenwell neighborhood, we were just a hop, skip, and a "mind the gap" away from downtown, where I was to continue my mission: vintage.
I knew I had entered the holy grail of gently-loved treasures when the shop announced no photos could be taken on the premises. A vintage shop without a hint of obsolescence, Blondie (located in East London) is a cache of mint-condition antiquated delights, a time capsule of everything chic that has existed...ever. The only thing more impressive than finding a vintage shop that doesn't smell like mothballs is the selection of designer fashions you thought were buried with the affluent who owned them before. If the shop is too crowded, head across the street to Absolute Vintage on Hanbury Street---owned by the same chaps, but specializing in handbags and footwear.
If dropping 400 euros is not your cup of Earl Grey, and you are more into the "hunt" of an I-can't-believe-it-fits retro surprise, head a wee bit farther East to Brick Lane. This Shop Rocks (and it does!) and Vintage Heaven are filled to the brim of their Bobby Helmets with wearable trophies of your prevailing taste.
But if you've spent all of your money on Christmas presents, you needn't splurge on a plane ticket and cross the pond to shop vintage! London's largest vintage shop, Rokit, ships worldwide. Cheerio, Guv'nah!
London, I love you - but don't you think the future Princess Katherine could use my Morning After Bag? You'll be able to pick one up at Harvey Nichols come January..."
